THE incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, has won the Saturday governorship election in Osun State, polling a total of 394,684 votes, to defeat his closest rival, Senator Iyiola Omisore, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, who polled 292,747 votes, while the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Alhaji Fatai Akinbade, polled 8,892 votes.

At precisely 7.30 a.m., the Returning Officers of the election, Professor Idowu Bamitele Omole, formally declared incumbent Governor Aregbesola of the APC re-elected.

According to the Returning Officer, the governor met the requirement of the law for the election by polling the highest number of votes.

There was spontaneous jubilation from the sprinkle of APC sympathisers, as Professor Omole announced the final result with many of them in engaging hugging and effusive smiles.

Omole said the election is an anti-climax to the anxiety that preceded the poll, just as he situated the success on adequate preparations.

He said there was a growing culture democratic now in the political space in the country.

According to election results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Aregbesola won in 24 Local Government Areas, while the PDP candidate, Omisore won in 8 Local Government Areas.

The suspense, the apprehension and the anxiety in Osun and across the country melted like ice to the pave way.

Osun people were awake all through the night while electoral officers counted the ballots, with adequate security maintained at the INEC office and the state.

To most of the other parties, there was victor, no vanquished in the election, because of the impartiality of the INEC, coupled with the fact that all stakeholders witnessed the entire process in the election and cpunting of votes.

INEC premises, which had been a beehive of political and security activities for weeks as stakeholders streamed in, began to pale, as the human and vehicular traffic began to thin minutes after the result was declared.

Utter shock and surprise trailed the outcome of Saturday governorship election in Osun, as many pundits were proved wrong on their pre-balloting prediction of likely upset by the opposition.

With the results announced, most political camps are already planning to go back to the drawing board, while some major actors in the poll are involved in blame game over defeat.

Security has been beefed up at the INEC office along Gbogan-Osogbo road, as INEC begins to round off the final collation to anoounce final results.

Stern-looking riot and conventional policemen are at stretegic positions within and outside the premises of the commission.

Their effirts are being complemented by plain-clothe security operatives and fully armed soldiers, as well as men of the Civil Defence Corps.

Soldiers are still mounting surveillance along the major entry points into Osogbo, the state capital.

Soldiers are patrolling some parts of Ife South Local Government minutes after the declaration of the Osun governorship poll result.
Some elements had reportedly tried to cause dissatisfaction, especially in the Ife South Local Government.
Immediately, armed soldiers in a hilux van patrolled the streets of Ifetedo, the headquarters of the local council area to forestall trouble.
