French press claim Falcao and Cavani both on Arsenal's shopping list

Arsene Wenger is to go all out for another forward, and two of the world's best top his list. But cheaper options closer to home are far more likely.

What is perhaps exciting in a moment of worry for Arsenal fans, is that the club is being linked to two top names, Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani.

It is French newspaper L'Equipe who report the Gunners interest, writing: "In the cross-hairs of the Londoners are notably Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Loic Remy (Queens Park Rangers), Edinson Cavani (PSG) or Falcao (Monaco). But all already very expensive or they are simply blocked by their current clubs."

So do the Gunners have a chance of signing either? Both are difficult deals to pull off, let alone at this stage of the transfer window – and it will take sizeable funds to do it.

Yet Arsenal do have the cash, and if Arsene Wenger were to make his case to the board, it is hard to imagine them saying no. If anything it will be the manager who is more reticent about a deal.

Radamel Falcao, who scored past the Gunners in the recent Emirates Cup, has been linked away from Monaco all summer long, and at the weekend said he was happy at the club. Prior to that, talk had circulated that he was available on a season long loan, so long as a side pay his extensive £10 million wages for the year. All in all, not a bad deal if it were accurate.

Cavani's case is more questionable. There are said to be tensions between him and the PSG hierarchy, while he is also less than thrilled at not playing through the centre, to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, yet he is not kicking up a fuss to leave either.

PSG, having decided not to sign Angel di Maria for £60 million, may be unlikely to suddenly want to sell a £50 million plus player, given the opportunity they have just passed up.

Either player would be a great addition, but whether Arsenal can pull off either deal looks like a long shot, if not entirely impossible.
