The Borno State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Salma Anas Kolo has confirmed that so far, a total of 2,924 cases of cholera have been recorded at the Biu displaced persons' camp.
The commissioners said out of this number, 405 have been admitted at the Biu General Hospital, while 11 deaths have been recorded at the camps and 16 at the Biu General Hospital, totalling 27 deaths.
The commissioner, who stated this while speaking on phone from Biu where she had proceeded from Maiduguri to monitor the case, said 11 persons died at the camp while 16 others died when they were being taken to the hospital for treatment.
The camps were established by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for over 10,000 displaced persons from Damboa.
She also revealed that over 1,000 persons have so far been treated by the team of health personnel at the camp for cholera symptoms.
The comprises some medical personnel from Doctors Without Border, the Borno ministry of health and UNICEF.
She noted that they contacted the disease as a result of poor hygienic condition at the camp and that the state government in conjunction with UNICEF and Red Cross have moved into the camps with enough drugs and doctors to improve the situation at the camp.
She further revealed that the state government has so far provided drugs worth N10 million to combat the epidemic, while the Red Cross Society is expected to also provide relief materials and drugs at the camps.
