NIGERIA : OLDIES INFORMATIVE MUSIC VS CONTEMPORARY DEFORMATIVE MUSIC
According to statistics from the world Bank, 32 of the 48 poorest countries in the world (including Nigeria) are in sub-saharan Africa.
Unemployment figures are deplorable, basic infrastructure are grossly inadequate. Therefore countless youths are frustrated frustrated. The truth is there is no greater priority for leaders,
particularly I in the developing world than creating system that will adequately engage the youths and provide an opportunity for them to contribute their quota to nation-building. This will require, amongst other things, creating a conducive environment that allows creativity of young people to thrive.
In the light of this, majority of Nigeria youth have taken to exploring their musical talent as many average Nigeria youth could be seen trying to to put one or two lyrics together; with reasons ranging from breaking the yoke of prevalent poverty to the desire of living an extravagant and flamboyant life as portrayed by most of our hip-hop artiste.
As makamba online put it that, "uninspired lyrics recycled beats and similarly themed music videos. These are the hallmarks of present-day Nigeria music. Biased toward the desperate need to create dance hits, Nigerian artistes have resorted to applying the Afro-pop formula that all so-called club bangers derive forms. Proper songwriting is a lost art, that's if it ever even really existed and "musicians" (used for lack of a better term) as many hat as they can-singer, rapper, songwriter, producer, one-man record label-even if they clearly lack the natural aptitude to play any of those roles properly".
Perhaps, it seems music in Nigeria of today is highly rewarding as multinational companies grant artistes expensive contracts and are simultaneously treated eminently, some government agencies are not an exemption to this. Even on our campuses eye dazzling prizes are giving to winners in musical contest compared to the trivial prizes given to winners of debate or quiz competitions. All of the aforementioned are some of the reasons music industry has been thrilling and thriving in Nigeria
Unarguable, I do not know much about music but I can easily differentiate between a well-composed, melifuous and melodious music with good rhythmical flow/movement or pattern and a shoddily composed one; while I often mishear words,i seldom mishear music: notes, melodies, harmonies, phrasing remain as clear and rich as they have been all my life( though I often mishear lyrics).
Intrinsically, music they say is a good food to the soul and I belive some of the main aims of music are to #Inform, #persuade and #entertain.
Apparently, Nigeria Old-school Artistes highly uphold the aforementioned aims of music as most of their songs dish out morals and at the same time entertain. A case study of one of Chief Ebenezer Obey fabiyi's "The Horseman and his son" where we are being regaled with a moral-laden story of the insatiable nature of human yet the its tuneful and melodious nature was never distorted.
Another is King Sunday Adegeye (King sunny Ade, KSA) a man blessed with deft dance steps that corroborates his rhythmic and well-composed informative lyrics, accompanied by the appropriate instrument in an orderly manner, you won't want a better guitarist and dancer than KSA, he is just a wizard.
Admittedly, the best guitarist of his time is the Afro-juju maestro himself, Sir Shina peters, always bubbling with an engertic performance cum sexy body movements which would not in anyway yet impair the message in his music.
Perhaps, Dr Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, the one whom I love his self-praise,( Ayinde-Ade fertilizer, Ololade Manure, Barusat omo subuola sifau) his language style is worthy of mention, multidimensional, code-switching into different languages ranging from Hausa,Arabic to English, a lover of brand/designers as portrayed by one of his Album entitled "Fuji Extravaganza" where alongside beautifully made beats and melodious song mentioned different brand of wears, Prada,Christian Dior amongst others.
Particularly, my dad's favourite whom I first learnt to listen to as a growing child is Late Haruna Isola, MON(baba Gani Agba) (the most travelled among his contemporary, visited over 20 countries) though he might not be very sophisticated in beat making like the aforementioned but proverbial, witty-sayings and rich in folktales than others maybe I say official singer of Late Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo(baba layinka), same as his Egba counterpart Alhaji Abdul waheed Ayinla omowura (egunmogaji of itoko land, my very own home town) you can't beat his incantatory prowess, sacarsm complimented by his adept creative use of the talking drum empowered by the drummerman Ramoni Adewole.
Besides, the only authentic and verifiable Doctoral Degree holder, though an honorary one from the University of London, Dr. Orlando Owomoyela owoh, in 1972 during his first ever musical tour to London UK, with his Omimah band to play for Nigerians from owo and neighbouring cities in UK on invitation by the President of Law students Association(a Nigerian), with his impressive performance the UCL confer a honorary Ph.D in Law on him even though it was extempore, this alone is enough to show how brilliantly "Kennery baba" could be while performing. Not forgetting the freedom Fighter and Singer Fela Anikulapo Kuti the saxophonist a brilliant performer to behold. These are few among many worthy to mention.
Incontrovertibly, today's musician are desperate to make dance hit, names and fortune other than educating and at the same time entertaining, Alas! Most of them are perverts, they through their music's pronounces and embraces lechecity and vulgarity with their amoral music; A case study of the super-star Yoruba rap artiste "olamide" who in one of his songs where he was featured by Dj zeez entitle "Atewo" he made use of an Hausa word in an expression which goes thus "----isan le bi Eni tolo "Burantashi" as translated by a friend who understands Hausa language "burantashi" simply refers to. A male sex organ" another is in another of his song where he said "Anti chidinma, onidi nla"
Similarly, is Ayodeji Balogun "wizkid" song entitled "in my bed" here he was busy analysing his intention/desire on how to get a lady laid in his bed as further authenticated by the title.
Additionally, another fast rising hip-hop artiste "Olalekside's" celebration of Internet fraudsters in his debut song entitled "Elegushi spenders" same goes to my "Baba Hafusah" (Reminiscence) as fondly called by fans, he's not an exemption in d vulgar use of words such as " o wo bum short sori "furo" rabata yen" etc in his song "Sunkere".
One cannot but imagine how amoral and profane this people could be at times, perhaps, I discovered most of this music wane quickly as a result of the beat it is made of. They'd always make use of a fast beat and as soon as another music with a faster beat is released, the former goes home and sounds awkward on hearing.
Obviously, a youth would prefer to dance to Skales recently dropped music "Shake body" to P-square's 2006/2007(not too sure) released song titled "busy-body" or Timaya's "Yankuluya", considering the waves of these songs in their times, it should be evergreen, but it is not because they were built on beat and not meaningful lyrics, and now we have faster and melodious beat; thus they are overshadowed.
Contrastingly, Dr sikiru Ayinde barrister's "Music Extravaganza ", KSA "Surprise" or Ayinla omowura's challenge Cup of 1972 are some of many others like them you'd want to savour at your pleased moment with obvious relish.
In conclusion, it's unarguable that the past 2 decades upward paraded some of the most beautiful musicians, hardly would one see one of them who could not play one musical instrument or the other, and they are cautious in their chosen choice of words to avoid vulgarity.
Therefore, government should check mate the use of vulgar or amoral words like such openly used by "Skally" "St.janet" and a host of others as this amoral and uncouth words are partly responsible for the high level of moral decadence prevalent in our society
Parent and both educational and religious institutions should teach their wards/people to appreciate, listen and buy good music and shun those music that negates social and religious ruling .Parent and both educational and religious institutions should teach their wards/people to appreciate, listen and buy good music and shun those music that negates social and religious rulings.
